Granger Construction managed construction of Michigan State University’s new STEM Teaching and Learning Facility.
The facility houses undergraduate teaching labs in a central campus location, with labs being modular and flexible to respond to changing instructional models and student research projects. The completed building allows the University to consolidate a number of teaching laboratories that are currently dispersed across campus to create a central hub for STEM teaching and learning. This world-class teaching and learning facility also focuses on faculty research to enhance MSU’s ability to attract acclaimed scientists and help solidify MSU’s place among the world’s premier research and teaching institutions.
Adaptive Reuse: This project utilized the existing power plant as the central portion of the building, with large additions on the north and south sides. The power plant required heavy demo and reconstruction, while keeping select architectural components to integrate the historical significance of the building into the overall design and character of the new facility.
Mass Timber: This is the first building on campus and the first building in the state of Michigan constructed using innovative Mass Timber Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) materials.
