Profile - VDC Engineer Intern Sai Srijith LingannapetaThere are many paths to a career in construction, and in 2024, VDC Project Engineer Sai Srijith Lingannapeta joined Granger Construction as a member of our summer internship cohort.

Sai joined Granger while completing a master’s degree in construction management at Michigan State University. When asked what led to his career choices, Sai noted that he originally obtained an undergraduate degree in Architecture from India and worked as an Architect for three years.

“My work onsite dealing with trades and contractors, as well as my curiosity to learn more, led me to pursue a master’s in construction management in the United States. […] My overall experience in India working as a project architect helped me understand tasks and duties at Granger. I am not fresh to the job, but already possess some skills in the industry. This has been helpful adjusting to my work life and duties at Granger.”

When considering his long-term construction career aspirations, Sai noted that he is interested in working toward a management position dealing with technology.

“My main interest lies in exploring the possibilities and use-cases of AI, ML and LLM in construction.”

Sai stated that Granger Construction’s investment in innovation, especially use-cases for drone technology, played a large factor in his initial decision to join the company.

“As an intern with Granger Construction, I have worked on multiple projects, including the Michigan State University Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Wood County Jail, Michigan CAT Niles Facility, and more.”

As a VDC Project Engineer, Sai’s daily responsibilities have ranged from assisting BIM coordinators and managers to completing 3D BIM modelling, gap modelling and SketchUp modelling. Sai has also completed virtual reality (VR) walk throughs and assisted with meeting minutes and as-built document procurement for various clients.

“Some of my favorite experiences with Granger have been weekly lunches with team members, conversations about funny moments in jobsite meetings and researching innovation.”

Sai noted that he has learned a lot from working with the Granger team, including continuing to strengthen communication skills and techniques for increasing efficiency.

“People at Granger are very helpful and resourceful. I have, in fact, gotten into the habit of helping people more after experiencing the work culture here at Granger.”

When asked about other departments besides VDC which he might be interested in exploring, Sai noted he would like to work on a jobsite alongside Granger Senior Superintendent Marc Arthur.

“Marc has a lot of experience in the industry, and I feel I would be a better individual if I could grow up professionally in that environment learning from him.”

Sai’s advice for others considering a construction internship or career is to consider what experiences you are looking for.

“Determine what tools and applications you may use in your role before starting your internship.”
